Scarlet Macaw

My vacation to Costa Rica was very productive, seeing many more species than my previous visit 2 years ago. A highlight is of course the Scarlet Macaw, which is endangered. The resort I stayed at is on a sanctuary for these gorgeous creatures, and goes so far as to set up man-made nesting boxes for them. I saw them daily landing in Almond trees which is a large part of their diet.

This image above is my favorite!

The colors on this large animal are so vibrant!

Getting close to these guys wasn't easy. I used plenty of stealth and failed many times, but determination does eventually pay off!

Finding them is pretty easy. They are extremely noisy!

Catching them in flight took lots of tries. I got lucky with this close distance.

Tomorrow...Capuchin Monkeys!

Also, don't forget to click on any photo to see them larger!

Awesome! Nice photo! We spent a month in CR about a year ago and the Macaws were definitely one of the highlights. Glad you had a fun time! We just got back from Trinidad and Tobago, so many great birds. Look forward to more of your pictures!

We usually only see them in small cages...so nice to see them living the way they were meant to.
