Long-eared Owl

As I posted previously, this Long-eared Owl was just 2 trees away from the Barn Owl.

The area it is in is a "honey hole" for owls because in the same woods, there has been Long-eared's, Saw Whet, Barn and a Great-horned Owl. In the field adjacent to the woods are 12 Short-eared Owls. AMAZING!!!!!! All at the same time, sharing the same location. FIVE DIFFERENT SPECIES OF OWLS!

Admittedly, these are not my best shots of LEO's, but I posted them anyway...

  1. They are great pics. Some of these owls look amazingly like some of the species we see at Chishakwe in Zimbabwe.

The LEO's look a bit like our Scops owls which we hear most nights but are very rare to see during day lit hours. They are incredibly well camouflaged and they kind of sway where they sit so blend in even better with rustling leaves and moving branches.

Thanks for sharing. We enjoy seeing some Northern hemisphere bird life!

  2. Nice photos of the LEO! He sure blends into his surroundings. That's pretty cool about the different species of Owls sharing space. Wonder how often that happens?
