As far as I can tell, the rut may have just officially begun (for me), as I witnessed a big buck trailing a doe into an open soybean field. He was a beauty too, with a whopping 15 points adorned on his massive rack!

The lighting angle was not the best, and the cold morning gave me troubles with lens fog, but other than snapping 336 photos and only a handful turning out, it was a GREAT morning!

WOW!!!
Wonderful pictures...don't tell anyone where you took them. We need to save a few of those big racks.

Wow, it looks like the action is breaking out there too. I can't get enough of seeing and photographing whitetail bucks.
In reference to your question on my blog: Most Shenandoah bucks, especially in the Big Meadows area are very accustomed to humans and ignore them, but this was still probably 40-50 yards away with the 500mmF4 and then cropped quite a bit.
I also noted your problem with the lens fogging in cold weather and I don't know if it is because of the deep lens hood or whatever, but my 500mmF4 seems to be the worst offender in that respect of the lenses I use.
I look forward to more of your whitetail posts!
Very nice pictures even with the difficulties you encountered.
Hannibal - these are great shots.
