Years and years of wildlife photography, 1000's of miles on the
odometer, and hours upon hours I can never get back (or want to),
searching for creatures big and small is how I spend my free time. A
wishlist in my head of encounters yet to be discovered is born, dreaming
of once-in-a-lifetime moments like this one I had this morning. Magical
is all I can say...<br /> <br /> I have only seen in pictures, a fawn
barely a few hours old, hiding from predators as mom is away, a survival
instinct never taught, but bred into their wild genes. <br /><span class="text_exposed_show"> <br />
Note: Newborn fawns have almost no body odor and their reddish brown
coat with white spots make young fawns almost invisible to predators.
Fawns lie motionless on the ground surrounded by low vegetation. The
fawn’s natural instinct is to freeze even when approached by another
animal. As fawns grow and mature, they will initially freeze, but they
jump up and bound away.<br /> Please don't try to "rescue" an abandoned
fawn. They are not without their mother. She must leave her baby to
feed herself, as the fawn is not yet strong enough to go with her. The
mother always returns!</span></span></span></h5>

One of the best sounds of Spring is these guys singing to each other. Trying to find one is quite the hunt in a forest full of hiding places. I always search, but NEVER find them. I got lucky the other day finding 2. My first 2 finds EVER in a completely natural setting.

Yep! Got lucky twice! American Bitterns are stocky and a well-camouflaged heron of dense reed beds, they are difficult to see. Their far-carrying booming call is distinctive, but the bittern itself likes to keep under cover.

Named because their colors are similar to those on the coat of arms of famous politician Lord Baltimore. Another cool fact is that Baltimore Orioles build unique, sock-like hanging nests.

I took a survey on Facebook to see what non-photographers thought and they overwhelmingly chose the original color version. I fancy the fancier b&w with a color emphasis on the goslings but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What do my photographer buddies think?

White-faced Ibis are awesome! Look at those long curved bills! Amazing creatures and a stopover visit near Wilmington made my day! Although they were not in the best lighting situation for photography, seeing these unusual creatures was worth it. Usually seen in Florida, these guys graced the town of Wilmington with their presence for just a few hours!

I usually flush them, but a few of these guys were very tolerant which makes for a great day in the field!

Pesky Tree Swallows tried to evict them but they held their ground and won the battles over and over and eventually won the war! Good Luck Bluebirds on your quest to start a new family this year!

Short-eared Owls that day roost in an agricultural ditch and are highly tolerant of cars stopping. So I get my directions and journey 130 miles to the location. Finding the owls along the tall grasses with their amazing camouflaged feathers was pretty frustrating at first, but once you spot the first one, you know exactly how to find more. Yep, there they were, just sitting & waiting for me to show up. The morning was extremely windy and these little fellas knew exactly how to pick excellent cover to break the blow. There were plenty of grassy "caves" to hide out in. Thanks guys! You made my day!

I found him this morning after last nights fresh snow. He migrated from a warmer climate recently, so I'm sure he's not too happy with this snow. His bill is used to sift through soil for bugs and worms.

Another tip and another journey to Wisconsin for an owl rarely seen even there. Like the Great Grey Owl (previous post) this little owl stays in the colder states like Minnesota and other northernmost areas. This migrant found its way south probably by accident as with the Great Grey. Bird Nerds like me will travel 100's of miles just to get a good look at one in the wild. He was well worth the trip from Illinois, even though the tolls on I294 are frickin ridiculous! $2.80. CrAzY!I stayed long enough for him to fly to a few posts, but no natural settings. Oh well, I got my owl!

It was obvious this wild owl was used to people as it approached quite close many times. The rumor mill was buzzing with sightings of this owl and the unethical behavior displayed by certain photographers baiting. This owl was looking for an easy meal while I was there, although no one baited him on this day. Right or wrong, perfect weather conditions and a big help from this lifer owl made this a spectacular day! Enjoy!

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70HxRXDwojQ/UQb0nk4AnKI/AAAAAAAAF20/mdksL21C1SM/s1600/IMG_2536.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70HxRXDwojQ/UQb0nk4AnKI/AAAAAAAAF20/mdksL21C1SM/s640/IMG_2536.jpg" width="427" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scartlet Macaw - A breeding pair</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My 3rd trip to Costa Rica was amazing! Reasons to keep going back is endless. The culture there is simply beautiful. The mantra for Costa Rica is: "Pura Vita", meaning "the pure life" or simply put: "the simple life". Costa Rica has the respect of the world for their respect of nature. Did you know that the residents who own property have to get permission to cut down a tree? The government then comes out and decides if the tree qualifies for killing it. Most of the time, they deny it unless it is completely dead already. Many species of trees are only found native in this country so wasting something so precious must require proper paperwork and removal.
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btZeR2SYXps/UQb0nxrXGNI/AAAAAAAAF24/Df-X_ZOoyOM/s1600/IMG_2441.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btZeR2SYXps/UQb0nxrXGNI/AAAAAAAAF24/Df-X_ZOoyOM/s640/IMG_2441.jpg" width="392" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pygmy Owl</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
There is very little crime in C.R. I found that fascinating. Talking with a local guide on 1 of our adventures told us that money isn't all that important. If you can pay your bills and feed your children, most people dont have a desire for luxuries. They have vast gardens for self-sustaining themselves so the rest just complicates their "pure life". What a way to live!
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4o482elA3Gc/UQb0qgK0Z4I/AAAAAAAAF3E/Xr4YF37R9es/s1600/IMG_2309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4o482elA3Gc/UQb0qgK0Z4I/AAAAAAAAF3E/Xr4YF37R9es/s640/IMG_2309.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chestnut-mandibled Toucan</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
All of these photos came from the same resort we had stayed in for the past 3 trips. The resort was cut out of a rainforest reserve. We stayed in bungalows that was surrounded in jungle. The resort removed very little trees, unlike alot of resorts who wipe out acres and acres to build huge highrises next to the beach. Not this place! That is why we go back to this particular place.
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FdImIuscuyY/UQb0rO1Lt-I/AAAAAAAAF3M/E-G-Us5KWKI/s1600/IMG_2802.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FdImIuscuyY/UQb0rO1Lt-I/AAAAAAAAF3M/E-G-Us5KWKI/s640/IMG_2802.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fiery-billed Aracari</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
It doesn't feel like you are in a resort. When you take a trail to go birdwatching, you are enveloped in rainforest and you can only hear nature.
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zNBNra8L9EI/UQb0ragINQI/AAAAAAAAF3Q/CSQN4pi0Big/s1600/IMG_2599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zNBNra8L9EI/UQb0ragINQI/AAAAAAAAF3Q/CSQN4pi0Big/s640/IMG_2599.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Three-toed Sloth</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We took an early morning birdwalk tour to see where the birds were. From there, we revisited those places to find even more birds.
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Capuchin Monkey Silhouette</td></tr>

<br />
Finding the sloth was a highlight I had not gotten in my previous 2 visits.

An encounter with this guy produced very poor quality photos, but I just had to give this guy respect for his his "craziness"! It looks as if he has a long drop tine that forks off. Anyway, I thought he was really cool.<br />
<br />
I "tried" to focus out my passenger side window, handholding my ridulculously heavy 300mm f2.8 with 2x attached and failed miserably. I usually have my homemade "seatpod" for these situations, but it was in my trunk. My bad! I added a filter application to try to hide the poor quality.<br />

Sometimes bad weather produces the best days in sightings. Although my ISO was set at 400 for lighting purposes this cold and rainy/foggy morning, I was blessed with seeing this massive 16 point buck! Just look at those massive beams! I call this guy "Knuckle Head" for obvious reasons. I am hoping my luck holds in the coming weeks as the rut comes into full swing.

I'm sooo glad to be blogging again! It's been a long time coming and frustrating at times, but finally, I found something blogworthy!
On a special note: I was laid off this past February, and with that, my desire to photo wildlife was shelved. I felt I needed to step up my game for my portrait photography business and get my life in order. I worked for a newspaper for 19 years, thinking I would retire from there, but as most know, print media is dying. 19 years ago, the internet did not exist. People got their news from TV and newspapers. Who knew that my choice in careers 19 years ago would fizzle out? Not me! We all get most of our news from the web at places like Google, Yahoo and Bing. We surf for everything we need. We resource the internet before we actually buy anything. I always google a review just to make sure I get the best price and quality for my dollar. I surely can't live without the internet, so I carry a small part in my own career's demise. I own that. It is what it is, good and bad... So enough about that, lets get on with the post!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AxYMWW6iE5Y/UI_eaYcP8jI/AAAAAAAAFz4/sADxQ2vgjJs/s1600/IMG_8212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AxYMWW6iE5Y/UI_eaYcP8jI/AAAAAAAAFz4/sADxQ2vgjJs/s640/IMG_8212.jpg" width="491" /></a></div>
<br />
The rut is coming, the rut is coming! I'm sooo excited! My favorite time of year is here! Here's a look at the first big buck I have photo'd this season. He was awesome! He was bedded in the tall grasses and was very difficult to see. I passed him by, distracted by a few does a few yards away. A friend of mine pointed him out with my second pass through. He laid there for quite awhile before deciding to move away, but when he did, it was all worth it! He gave quite a show, standing broadside checking me out, as he finally wandered away looking for better deeper cover to hide in. What a great buck to lead off the rut!<br />

<span style="font-size: 0.8em; margin-top: 0px;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/peggyhanna/7551742566/">Injured Owl?</a>, originally uploaded by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/peggyhanna/">Hannibals Animals</a>.</span></div>
I got a call from a friend who was concerned about an owl that was in her barn. She thought it must be injured or sick because her kids were doing their chores in and around the animal this morning, without a disturbance from the owl. I drove over and found the same thing as I entered the barn. This guy looked pretty normal without visible signs of injury. His eyes seemed droopy, but then plenty of light flooded the interior of the barn. I approached on my knees very slowly, stopping and checking for signs of stress along the way, until I got to about 5 feet. There were no signs of stress or warnings, i.e. hissing or barking, etc... I checked the barn for feathers and saw 1 tail feather but that was it. I checked both flanks, and as far as I could see, no injuries. I called Flint Creek and am waiting on them to return my call...<br />
<br />
UPDATE: Took the owl to a rescue. Very lethargic so will call and get updates on its health tomorrow...<br />
<br />
UPDATE: It died of neurological issues around 4:30pm yesterday. The vet worked on him all day and at 1 point thought there was a chance, but then turned for the worse. Suspect: West Nile Virus <br />

<br />
A rare species for Illinois, this Yellow-crowned Night Heron showed up in my hometown a week or so ago. What luck! A friend discovered this guy and put out the word...
Seeking him out, I was pleased to find him quickly and in decent light.<br />

<br />
He was also pretty tolerant, letting me approach to about 50 feet. I try never to push him to stress, so I observed his movement and behavior. As long as he fished, I knew he was comfortable. If he watched me for too long, I backed off immediately so that he could continue his natural behavior. He caught a crayfish and I was rewarded for my good wildlife photography etiquette!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4
